Syria imposes strict security measures on Lebanese borders

Arab World Materials 14 April 2011 23:28 (UTC +04:00)

Syrian authorities tightened the border with Lebanon Thursday, carrying out thorough searches of inbound vehicles after reports of arms shipments entering from its smaller neighbor, a Lebanese security official said Thursday, dpa reported.

"Between 400 and 500 trucks are now stuck at the border crossings between Lebanon and Syria after the Syrian authorities enforced heavy security measures at its borders, to prevent any arms shipments into the country," the source said.

"The inspection of each truck is taking about one hour," he added.

The new strict measures came after the Syrian news agency SANA reported that Lebanese security forces stopped two cars loaded with weapons from entering Syria.

Lebanese custom officials at the border could not confirm or deny the news item.

Al-Assad and state media have repeatedly blamed Lebanese conspirators for the deadly unrest surrounding Syrian anti-government protests, which began on March 15.
