The UN Children's Fund on Tuesday condemned Syria's military crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators which has resulted in the deaths of at least 30 children, of whom some were tortured, dpa reported.

"The use of live ammunition against demonstrators has reportedly left at least 30 children dead," the UN agency said in a statement as new information emerged that children have become targets of repression.

UNICEF said it had no independent way to verify the number of the victims and the circumstances of their death. But it said, "UNICEF strongly condemns all acts of violence against children everywhere."

The agency said it obtained video images of children who recently "were arbitrarily detained and suffered torture or ill-treatment during their detention, leading in some cases to their death."

It called on the Syrian government to thoroughly investigate the news reports and bring the perpetrators to justice.
