The US military says two American soldiers have been killed in northern Iraq, making June the deadliest month for US forces in the Middle Eastern country since May 2009, Press TV reported.

"Two US service members were killed today while conducting operations in northern Iraq," the military said in a statement on Sunday without providing further information about the incident, AFP reported.

At least 11 US soldiers have been killed in Iraq since the beginning of June.

Sunday's casualties raise the total death toll for US forces in Iraq to 4,465 since March 2003, according to icasualties.org.

Earlier in the day, unidentified gunmen launched a mortar attack on a US military airbase in northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk. However, no casualties or damage were reported.

There are currently about 50,000 US soldiers stationed in Iraq that are due to leave the country by the end of this year, in line with the 2008 US-Iraq Status of Forces Agreement.
