The Indonesian government has asked for 27,000 additional hajj quota to visit Saudi Arabia in the hajj session this year, Bisnis Indonesia daily quoted a minister as saying on Thursday.

Religion Minister Suryadharma Ali said that the proposal had been submitted to Saudi Arabian Minister for Islam Affairs, Grants and Guidance Syekh Shaleh bin Abdul Aziz bin Muhammad Syaikh, Xinhua reported.

According to Ali, Syekh Shaleh has principally agreed the proposal and would fight for it.

"Indonesia has a big interest to get the additional quota due to long queue. God willing, he will fight for it. Hopefully, it could be agreed in the near term," he said.

He said that the approval should be taken soon as Indonesia needs to socialize it.

Currently, Indonesia's hajj quota is 211,000.
