UN leader urges Damascus to implement reform, stop violence

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon urged the Syrian government on Wednesday to heed the Security Council's demands for political reform and fundamental freedoms for the Syrian people.

The council asked Ban to report on the situation in Syria in seven days, dpa reported.

Ban said following the council's issuance of a statement condemning the violence in Syria that he plans to mobilize UN agencies and cooperate with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to gather information about Syria as demanded by the council.

Ban said the council's statement sent a "clear message" to Syria to stop the violence. He said the killing of civilian protesters in recent days was "brutally shocking."

He said all deaths in Syria must be investigated independently and transparently.
