Twelve people died Friday in Syria's pro-democracy protests, with most of the casualties reported in the central province of Homs, activists said.
"Ten people were killed in Homs, in heavy machine-gun fire," said Lebanon-based activist Omar Idlibi, adding that the sounds of explosions could be heard in several parts of the province, DPA reported.
A human rights group said that government troops shot dead two civilians, one in the northern province of Idlib, the other in the southern province of Daraa.
