Bomb attacks across Iraq killed at least 11 people on Saturday, medical and security officials said, dpa reported.

Three bombs went off in a crowded market area in Baghdad, killing four people and injuring 25.

In central Iraq, six people were killed when a roadside bomb went off in the city of Falluja, 60 kilometres west of the capital.

Eight people were injured by the blast, police sources said.

In the northern city of Mosul, one man was killed and a soldier injured when a bomb went off targeting a military patrol in the city, located some 400 kilometres north of Baghdad.

Violence in Iraq had steadily dropped after a peak in 2006. But attacks have become an almost daily occurrence in recent months as US troops withdraw.

The bombings occurred as Iraqi security forces announced that more than 14,000 personnel were taking part in securing Shia Muslim pilgrims marking the death of Imam Hussein, Prophet Mohammed's grandson, in the Battle of Karbala in the year 680.

More than one million pilgrims are expected in the central city of Karbala, south of Baghdad. The pilgrimage will culminate on Ashura Day, a Shia Muslim festival that falls on December 5 this year.

Safeguarding pilgrims during major Shiite festivals has been a challenge in Iraq, and Ashura processions in previous years have been attacked.
