The Syrian army opened fire on a four-member Syrian family during their escape to Jordan Sunday, wounding a woman, a Jordanian army spokesman said, dpa reported.

"Syrian soldiers opened fire on the family - husband, wife and two daughters - wounding the woman," the spokesman was quoted as saying by the official Petra news agency.

"The Jordanian troops stationed in the border area provided protection to the defecting family and transferred the injured woman to hospital," he added in a rare statement to be issued by the Jordanian army about the defection of a Syrian family.

The Amman bureau of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said earlier that it was extending assistance to about 1,000 Syrians who have so far fled to Jordan for safety.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh said this week that about 100 Syrian army soldiers had defected to Jordan.

Jordan on Sunday joined 18 other Arab states in imposing sanctions on the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad for its bloody crackdown on pro-reform protesters.
