Syria won't be able to counteract the additional sanctions imposed by the Arab League against Damascus because, unlike Iran, the country has no diversified, strong economy, said Middle East expert Ali Baker.

"The economy of Syria is not strong enough to fight the sanctions alone," Baker told Trend.
According to Baker, some analysts think the sanctions unlikely will impact on the President Assad regime; however, if other countries such as Turkey join these sanctions, the Syrian regime will be weakened in the near future.

Anti-government protests in Syria don't stop for the past eight month. Recently, the opposition, especially in areas bordering Lebanon and Turkey, is becoming increasingly violent. Deaths of people - both civilians and uniformed personnel are reported daily.

According to UN statistics, the number of clashes victims in the country exceeded 3.5 thousand.

The Syrian authorities say more than about 1.5 thousand dead on both sides, including more than 1.1 thousand law enforcement officers.
