Israel's new ambassador to Egypt arrived on Monday in Cairo, where he faces the challenge of preserving precarious diplomatic relations after the storming of the Israeli embassy in September dpa reported

Egyptian airport officials said Yaakov Amitai was accompanied by several Israeli diplomats.

Amitai succeeds Yitzhak Levanon, who completed his term last month. Israel evacuated staff at its Cairo embassy in September after angry protesters stormed the building that housed the mission, demanding the expulsion of the ambassador.

One of Amitai's first tasks will be to find a new, safer location for the embassy.

The attack on the embassy came after six Egyptian border police officers were killed in an Israeli airstrike that Israel said was meant to target Palestinian militants.

It was the worst crisis between Egypt and Israel since the ouster of former president Hosny Mubarak. Egypt in 1979 became the first Arab country to sign a peace deal with Israel. The two countries are trying to preserve the landmark agreement.

Israel has voiced concern over gains made by Islamist parties in Egypt's parliamentary election. Some Islamist have called for a review of the peace agreement.
