Syrian government forces Saturday stormed a north-eastern village in search for army defectors, opposition activists based in Lebanon told dpa.

"The forces are attacking the village of Deir az-Zour from three fronts using tanks," added the activists.

Four people were killed and more than 10 wounded in the crackdown, according to the activists.

Elsewhere, near the Syrian capital Damascus, gunfire shots were heard across the area of Douma. No casualties were reported.

More than 5,000 people have been killed in the Syrian government's clampdown on pro-democracy protests since they began in mid-March, according to the United Nations.
