Egyptian presidential candidate Abdul Moneim Aboul Fotouh was injured when gunmen attacked his car on the outskirts of Cairo, members of his campaign said on Friday, dpa reported.

Masked gunmen hit Aboul Fotouh over the head with a machine gun while he was heading back to Cairo late Thursday after a conference in Shebeen al-Koum, a town located some 82 kilometres northwest of Cairo.

He was transferred to hospital along with his driver, who was also injured.

It was not clear whether the attack was a political hit or a robbery.

Security has been a major concern since the ouster of former president Hosny Mubarak last year, with crime soaring despite government promises to plug a nationwide security vacuum.

Aboul Fotouh, an Islamist candidate and former senior figure in the influential Muslim Brotherhood, is one of the front-runners in the upcoming presidential elections.

Registration for presidential candidates will open on March 10. Polls are scheduled to take place before the end of June.
