United Nations and Arab League special envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan, expressed "grave concern at the situation in Syria" Saturday, and urged President Bashar Al-Assad to take concrete steps to end the current crisis, a UN statement issued in Damascus said.

"Annan put several proposals on the table regarding stopping the violence and the killing, access for humanitarian agencies and the ICRC, release of detainees, and the start of an inclusive political dialogue to address the legitimate aspirations and concerns of the people," the statement said, dpa reported.

The statement quoted Annan as describing his talks in the Syrian capital "as candid and comprehensive."

According to the UN statement Annan will meet President al-Assad for a second time on Sunday to resume discussions, before he heads in the afternoon for Qatar.
