NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen on Monday urged against weapons being funneled to Syrian rebels, warning about the risk of regional proliferation amid reports that Arab countries were poised to arm the opposition, dpa reported.

"I don't think the right way forward would be to provide any group with weapons," Rasmussen said in Brussels. "There is a clear risk that the provision of arms to any group in Syria would also lead to a potentially dangerous proliferation of weapons in the region."

He said he would instead like to see "a peaceful and political solution," pointing to the efforts of United Nations special envoy Kofi Annan.

He also reiterated that NATO "has no intention whatsoever" to intervene in the Middle Eastern country, while describing the regime's bloody opposition crackdown as "absolutely outrageous."
