Russia warns Syrian rebels against derailing UN peace plan
Russia on Wednesday warned Syrian rebels seeking to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad against derailing a peace plan brokered by United Nations-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan dpa reported
"Reports indicate that fighters with the FSA are abusing their refugee status in Turkey," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told journalists in Moscow, referring to fighters with the rebel Free Syrian Army whose leadership is based in Turkey.
He said that media reports "have proved that the armed opposition is making attempts to organize provocations in order to wreck reconciliation," according to the Itar-Tass news agency.
"Some people want the Kofi Annan plan to fail and other variants, including military means, to be used," the minister said.
Lavrov said Russia was concerned that foreign powers were trying to "privatize" the Syrian conflict.
