UN: Diplomatic contact group on Syria to meet "soon"

The diplomatic contact group, which the United Nations is currently forming, is scheduled to hold its first meeting "soon" to give "teeth" to the six-point plan for Syria proposed by international envoy Kofi Annan, a UN spokesman said in Geneva.

The UN is pursuing the contact group to help reinvigorate the stalled Annan plan. It is not known what countries and individuals would take part in the group, which would push both the Syrian government and opposition to implement the ceasefire plan, dpa reported.

"It's coming together," said Annan's spokesman Ahmed Fawzi. "Diplomacy has intensified from all parties."

"The objective of creating this group is to give teeth to the plan ... to convince the parties to implement the plan in its entirety," Fawzi said.
