Toll in Egypt building collapse rises to 11

Arab World Materials 16 July 2012 00:42 (UTC +04:00)

Eleven bodies have been found under the rubble of buildings which collapsed in the coastal city of Alexandria, state media reported on Sunday, a day after the disaster, DPA reported.

A new 11-storey building collapsed on Saturday in the western neighbourhood of Gomrok in Alexandria. Two others next to it then tumbled down.

The initial death toll was nine, but rescue teams retrieved two more bodies on Sunday as efforts continued to find any survivors who might still be alive under the rubble.

Egypt has suffered several similar disasters, mostly blamed on building code violations. In 2008, a rockslide buried a shanty town at the foot of a cliff in Cairo, killing more than 100 people.
