Syrian rebels vowed Monday to confront troops massing around the northern city of Aleppo for what the government has described as a "decisive battles dpa reported
"We are waiting for the 25,000 troops which this cowardly regime has massed around the city and we will show them a real battle then," Abu Omar al-Halabi told dpa by phone form Aleppo.
"Despite the intense bombardment and strafing from warplanes, our rebels are advancing towards the city centre," he said.
Al-Halabi reported heavy shelling and clashes Monday in the Salaheddine area to the southwest, and al-Sukkari and Hananou to the northeast.
The clashes, according to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, killed nine including a rebel leader.
