A car bomb on Sunday in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi killed one person, the state-run news agency reported.

The attack comes few days before the newly-elected General National Congress appoints a new prime minister, who will be tasked with replacing the transitional government - which many Libyans accused of failing to ensure order in the northern African country where proliferation of arms is posing a security threat, dpa reported.

A security official in the city said that an investigation was underway.

Libya has seen several bouts of violence, mainly in the eastern region, since the armed revolt toppled Moamer Gaddafi last year.

In August, a bomb blast destroyed a car belonging to an Egyptian diplomat in Benghazi, a day after two bombings left one dead in the capital Tripoli.
