EU pledges additional humanitarian aid for Syria

The European Commission has pledged a further 50 million euros (63 million dollars) in humanitarian aid to Syria and neighbouring countries harbouring its refugees, dpa reported.

Friday's announcement raises the European Union's total humanitarian funding for Syrian civilians to more than 200 million euros, or just over half the global total, said EU Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva.

"While this tragedy requires a political solution, in the absence of it our primary concern must be to reduce the suffering of ordinary citizens," Georgieva said.

She also called on other donors to step up their aid to Syrians, adding that there were now 240,000 refugees in Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey.
