United Nations and Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi held talks on Syria with Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Wednesday as he sought ways to halt rising violence in Syria, dpa reported.

The Foreign Ministry gave no immediate details of the talks, which took place following the death of more than 70 people in Syria on Tuesday, according to Syrian activists.

The latest violence erupted as Brahimi travelled to China in an attempt to secure support for his efforts to stop the violence. He met Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday.

China and Russia are Syria's long-term allies and have vetoed three Western- and Arab-backed resolutions at the UN Security Council condemning the Syrian regime for the violence.

China backed Brahimi's plan for a failed four-day truce agreed by the Syrian government and the rebels last week.

The truce has been marred by renewed violence, with both sides blaming each other for the breaches.

Activists have said that the 20-month Syrian crisis has killed more than 34,000 people, since it began in March 2011.
