French president to visit Lebanon

French President Francois Hollande will travel to Beirut on Sunday for talks on the region with his Lebanese counterpart President Michel Suleiman, dpa reported according to the Lebanese newspaper As Safir.

"The significance of the short visit is that it comes amid the delicate situation that Lebanon and the region are passing through," the paper quoted unnamed diplomatic sources as saying.

Lebanon has recently seen the 20-month conflict in neighbouring Syria spill over into its territory.

The chief of Lebanon's domestic intelligence was killed last month in Beirut in a bomb attack blamed by the opposition on Syria.

Following the assassination, deadly clashes erupted in Lebanon between supporters and opponents of the Syrian government.
