Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas asked the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday to issue to the Palestinian people a "birth certificate of the reality of the state of Palestine", dpa reported.

"It is time for action and the moment to move forward," Abbas told the 193-nation assembly, which was expected to vote on a resolution upgrading Palestinian status to non-member state.

"Your support for our endeavour today will give a reason for hope to a people besieged by a racist, colonial occupation."

He said the Palestinian people will accept "no less than independence of the state of Palestine, with East Jerusalem as its capital, on all the territory occupied in 1967 to live in peace and security alongside with Israel."
