At least 106 people, mainly women and children, were executed this week in the central Syrian city of Homs in what an opposition group Thursday called a "massacre" by government troops, dpa reported.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the alleged mass killings had occurred Tuesday in the sparsely populated area of Basateen al-Huwaisa.

"The people were either burnt inside their houses or stabbed to death," the watchdog said in a statement.

The troops had stormed the area hunting for rebels fighting to oust President Bashar al-Assad, according to the observatory.

"Whole families were slaughtered by al-Assad's soldiers," Omar Homsi, an activist based in Homs, told dpa by phone.

"We call on the UN to send an investigating team to the area to document the new massacre," he added.

News from Syria cannot be verified as authorities have barred most foreign media from the country since the anti-government uprising erupted in March 2011.
