Four suspected al-Qaeda militants were killed Monday in an airstrike between the western Yemeni cities of Sana'a and Mareb, the Defence Ministry said, dpa reported.

Monday's toll brings to 21 the number of suspected insurgents killed in the past two days.

Seven were killed in two separate airstrikes late Saturday, while at least 10 died when a bomb went off inside the home of a senior member of the terrorist network on Sunday, the ministry said.

Militants linked to al-Qaeda took advantage of a popular uprising in 2011 to strengthen their presence in the impoverished Arabian Peninsula country, mainly in the south.

The Yemeni military, backed by US drones, has since April been launching attacks against al-Qaeda-linked radicals.
