At least 10 civilians were killed after explosions at an army base in northern Yemen sent rocket and tank shells crashing into nearby houses, Yemeni media reported Thursday.

The independent news site Mareb Press said the blasts had occurred in munition depots at the base of the 25th Mechanized Brigade in Abs in the province of Hajjah, dpa reported.

Seven residents were also injured and several houses destroyed in the incident, according to the report.

No immediate information was available on military casualties or the cause of the incident.

In October, a blast in a munition store at a base in the Yemeni capital Sana'a killed one civilian when shells hit residential areas in the vicinity.

The Defence Ministry said the blast was accidental.
