Considerable reduction observed in Syrian oil production

Oil production has recently decreased by 95 per cent which is up to 20,000 barrels a day in Syria, Syrian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Suleiman Abbas was quoted by Al Jazeera TV channel as saying.

He added that oil production has been reduced for the past two years. In particular, Syria was producing 380,000 barrels of oil per day in March 2011 before the events in the country.

Moreover, gas production has been reduced by a half in Syria. For example, Syria was producing 30 million cubic meters of gas per day in March 2011, while today this figure has dropped to 15 million cubic meters of gas per day.

Clashes between government forces and armed opposition have continued in Syria for over two years. According to the UN statistics, the total number of victims of the conflict in Syria exceeds 82,000 and nearly three million people are in need of humanitarian assistance. Syrian authorities say they are opposed to the well-armed militants.
