Tunisian opposition politician and parliamentarian Mohamed Brahmi was gunned down outside his home in Tunis on Thursday, his party announced.

Brahmi, who is coordinator of the secular leftist People's Movement was shot by unknown attackers using automatic weapons, a party spokesman told Radio Mosaique. He was rushed to hospital where he died of his injuries, dpa reported.

The Popular Front opposition coalition confirmed his death, which comes a little under six months after the assassination of Popular Front leader, Chokri Belaid.

Belaid was shot dead outside his home in Tunis on February 6. A member of a radical Islamist group was identified as the suspected killer. He is still being sought by police.

His party and family accused the ruling Islamist party Ennahda of having political responsibility for his death, which sparked mass anti-government protests.
