The al-Qaeda-linked group claimed that the overnight attack on the house located in one of its coastal bases resulted in the killing of one rebel fighter. No foreign military units typically involved in such operations in Somalia have claimed responsibility for the strike.
"Westerners in boats attacked our base at Barawe beach and one was martyred from our side," Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, al Shabaab's spokesman for military operations told Reuters by telephone, according to the news agency.
The group said it had attacked a Kenyan shopping mall two weeks ago, killing at least 67 people. but it was not immediately clear who was killed during the claimed house attack and why the town of Barawe was targeted specifically.
