An Egyptian court Thursday acquitted the two sons of ousted president Hosny Mubarak and his last prime minister Ahmed Shafiq of wasting public money in a land deal, dpa reported.

Shafiq was accused of illegally selling state-owned land to Mubarak's sons, Alaa and Gamal, at prices lower than the market value.

The younger Mubaraks appeared for the verdict session held at the makeshift courtroom in the Police Academy on the outskirts of Cairo. Shafiq, an ex-presidential contender, did not show up.

He has been staying in the United Arab Emirates since he left Egypt in June 2012 after losing the presidential election to Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Mubarak's sons are being tried along with their father in a separate corruption case related to alleged influence peddling.
