A senior Yemeni intelligence officer was shot dead by a gunman in the southern city of Adan on Thursday, said police, dpa reported.

The gunman fired two bullets at the head of Colonel Marwan al-Muqbali, an officer in Yemen's intelligence service, as he left his house in the southern district of al-Qalua, reported independent Yemeni website Barakish Net, citing an unnamed security official.

Al-Muqbali died immediately. The assailant fled, according to the report.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, the latest in a series of such attacks upon security personnel.

A car bombing on Tuesday hit a security headquarters in Aden, injuring a number of soldiers.

Government officials have repeatedly blamed such assaults on insurgents with suspected links to al-Qaeda, which has one of its most active branches in Yemen.

The Yemeni army started a high-profile campaign, supported by the United States, more than a year ago against suspected al-Qaeda operatives, mainly in the volatile south of the Arabian Peninsula country.
