Libyan mufti says those who fight against Haftar will die martyrs

A Libyan mufti told a television channel on Monday that those who die while fighting Libya's renegade ex-General Khalifa Haftar will die as "martyrs," Al Arabiya News Channel reported.

"Anyone who joins the brigade of Khalifa Haftar and dies, will die in ignorance. But, the ones who fight against him and die will be martyrs," al-Sadek al-Gheriani said during a show called "Islam and life" broadcasted on the state-owned television channel "al Wataniya."

The statements were previously published on Dar Al-Ifta website, Gheriani said, adding that he was just reminding viewers.

The mufti added that those helping Haftar deserve to be fought against as they are disobeying the rule of God and killing people unlawfully.

Haftar's supporters see him as the man to build a strong national army capable of crushing radical armed groups which have sprung up across Libya from the ranks of rebels who fought in the 2011 revolt.

But Haftar has been branded an "outlaw" by Libya's interim authorities, while his Islamist detractors have accused him of leading a coup - a claim he denies.

Last week, Haftar escaped an assassination bid when a suicide bomber attacked a villa outside Benghazi, killing three of his aides.
