Despite its support for a Palestinian state, the United Nations on Tuesday urged governments to look at the consequences before voting to recognize such a statehood, dpa reported.
"A Palestinian state is long overdue and is key to addressing the legitimate aspirations of both peoples (Palestinians and Israelis) and paramount to the stability of the region," said Robert Serry, the UN envoy for the peace process in the Middle East.
"The UN secretary general hopes that all concerned look at the consequences of any decision they make responsibly," Serry told a meeting of the UN Security Council, ahead of Thursday's vote.
