Israel rejects changes to Egypt peace treaty

Israel said Sunday it would not allow any changes to its 1979 peace treaty with Egypt, which prevents Cairo sending a larger number of troops into the increasingly restive Sinai Peninsula, dpa reported.

"There is no chance whatsoever that Israel will allow any change to the Camp David accords, neither to the military appendix, nor to the agreement itself," Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said.

Since the toppling of Egyptian president Hosny Mubarak last year there has been a marked increase in violent attacks by militants on Egyptian and Israeli troops in the vast desert peninsula.

Lieberman argued that rather than a larger number of Egyptian troops, a "strong willingness" by Cairo to fight radical Islamic militants was needed to restore order in Sinai.

"There is no chance (of a treaty change) and the Egyptians had better not delude themselves, delude others or (even) raise that demand," he told Israel Radio.

Israel and Egypt negotiated their peace treaty, signed in 1979, at the US presidential retreat of Camp David, north of Washington.
