Three killed in Italian courtroom shootout

(Guardian) - A man opened fire in an Italian courtroom this morning, fatally wounding his estranged wife and killing her brother, before being shot dead by police.

The couple were in court for a hearing to legally separate, the Italian news agency Ansa reported. The woman later died in hospital.

The man, Klirim Fejzo and his wife, Vvosa Demcolli , both Albanian, were attending the hearing in Reggio Emilia , north of Bologna, when the husband pulled out a gun. He aimed it at his wife and her brother, then started shooting erratically, said officers in the courtroom.

"He was shooting like crazy at everybody," officer Antonio Turi told Ansa .

Demcolli was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. Her brother, Arjan Demcolli died at the scene. A police officer and Demcolli's lawyer were also injured during the shooting, though not seriously.

Italian officials are now investigating how Fejzo was able to smuggle a gun into the courtroom.
