Ukraine new parliament to start work next week

( People's Daily ) - Ukraine's sixth parliament will start work on Nov. 23, the preparatory group for the first session of the new parliament decided on Thursday.

The preparatory group also elected Raisa Bohatyriova of the Regions Party as the group's head, Roman Zvarych of the Our Ukraine Party-People's Self-Defense Bloc her deputy. Ihor Sharov of the Lytvin Party was appointed the group's secretary.

"The Our Ukraine Party-People's Self-Defense Bloc and the Bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko will formally sign a coalition agreement on Nov. 23," Viacheslav Kyrylenko, a leader of the Our Ukraine Party-People's Self-Defense Bloc, said after the meeting of the preparatory group.

He said that after that, democratic forces would do all so as elect the parliament's leadership, form parliamentary committees and appoint a new cabinet as soon as possible.

But Mikola Azarov, a leader of the Regions Party, said that his party is still trying to create an effective coalition with all other parties which have mandates in the new parliament.

In the legislative elections held in late September, the Regions Party garnered 175 seats out of a total 450, Tymoshenko's block collected 156, Our Ukraine 72, the Communists 27 and the Lytvin party 20.
