( RIA Novosti ) - A skirmish in southern Chechnya left a serviceman and a militant dead, a police spokesman in the North Caucasus republic said on Wednesday.

The spokesman for the Chechen Interior Ministry said Chechen police and Russian Interior Ministry troops clashed with a group of militants in the Shatoi District woodland near the town of Vysokogornoye.

The militants also wounded three police officers.

The spokesman said an operation was underway to track down the militants.

Chechnya saw two military campaigns in the 1990s-early 2000s, as Moscow sought to restore control over the mountainous republic, ruled at the time by a separatist regime.

Although the active phase of the war is over, sporadic clashes with militants and terrorist attacks are common in the troubled republic, as well as in adjacent republics such as Ingushetia and Daghestan.
