( AFP ) - Two people died after a mid-air collision between two light aircraft Sunday, British health officials confirmed.

After the collision, one of the planes, with one person on board, managed to land safely at East Midlands airport in central England but another crash-landed in a field in the central county of Staffordshire.

The airport was closed for several hours after the crash, which was reported to emergency services at 1220 GMT.

"On arrival, two people were confirmed deceased at the scene, by ambulance service staff," a spokeswoman for the West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

She added that further details would be available once investigations were carried out by local police.
