( AFP ) - China's parliament approved Saturday the appointment of Chen Deming as commerce minister, in an anticipated move that comes amid a series of high-level leadership changes.

Chen, 58, was named to replace Bo Xilai, who has been appointed as the top Communist Party leader of Chongqing metropolis in southwestern China, the National People's Congress said on its website.

Chen, formally the governor of Shaanxi province, recently took up the post as vice minister of commerce, signalling his eventual promotion to the more senior job.

Earlier this month, Chen was a top representive for China in high-level commerce and trade talks with both the United States and Japan.

Following a five-yearly Communist Party meeting in October, a wide-range of leadership changes have taken place in China.
