( dpa ) - Gunmen opened fire on a convoy of tourists in south-eastern Yemen on Friday, killing two female Belgian tourists and two Yemenis, police officials said.

Another Belgian tourist and three Yemenis were wounded in the attack, the officials said.

They said the assailants opened fire on four Land Cruiser vehicles carrying 15 tourists in the Doan area of Hadhramout, around 900 kilometres south-eastern the capital Sana'a.

The tourists were touring a historical site in the neighbouring Sayoun town.

Local officials said the attackers fled the scene on a sport utility vehicle and that military and police patrols were deployed to chase them.

Military helicopters were also backing the manhunt efforts.

Governor of Hadhramout Taha Hajir said in statement posted on the Defence Ministry's website said security forces closed the area.

Authorities sent a plane to Sayoun to transport the dead and wounded to Sana'a.
