Government official killed in southern Afghanistan

( dpa ) - The provincial head of the National Reconciliation Commission was assassinated in the southern province of Zabul, a government spokesman said Monday.

The vehicle of Qayyum Mujaddedi was intercepted Sunday afternoon by unidentified armed men, he was shot dead and his driver and one guard were kidnapped, Gulab Shah Alikhel, spokesman of southern Zabul's provincal governor said.

Mujaddedi's body was found in Kakaran area near Qalat, the capital of Zabul, Alikhel told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

The director of the Commission for National Reconciliation, established by the Afghan government to persuade militants to lay down arms and join the government's peace efforts, was on his way to Kabul.

The official said enemies of peace in Afghanistan are responsible for the murder.
