( dpa ) - Germany is providing an additional one million euros (1.4 million dollars) to aid organizations active in Afghanistan to counter the hardest winter there in more than a decade, the Foreign Ministry announced in Berlin Thursday.

The money brings to 168 million euros the funds provided by Germany for humanitarian aid and mine clearance since 2001.

The German Foreign Ministry said the new money was intended for urgent life-saving operations. Those worst affected included residents of remote villages and returning exiles and internally displaced people.
