( dpa ) - The German Development Ministry announced Wednesday it would increase aid to Afghanistan by a million euros (1.5 million dollars) to counter the effects of a particularly harsh winter.

Last week, the German Foreign Ministry announced it was increasing its aid to Afghanistan also by a million dollars.

Development Minister Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul noted heavy snowfalls and temperatures reaching 20 degrees below zero and said the additional aid would help up to 2.5 million people.

The UN aid organizations, the World Food Programme, the World Health Organization and UNICEF, have made a joint appeal for 80 million dollars in additional aid.
