( dpa ) - An unknown amount of oil has spilled into the Baltic Sea at Mazeikiu Nafta's Butinge terminal, local media reported Thursday.

The spill occurred at 2 a.m. (0000 GMT) on Thursday, Leta news agency reported citing Lithuanian National Radio.

The oil covered a 50-square-metre area and was moving towards Latvia, Leta said.

Located on the Lithuanian-Latvian border, the oil terminal became the only way to supply Mazeiku Nafta with oil after Russia turned off the Druzhba pipeline in 2006.

Several oil spills have occurred at the terminal since it opened in 1999.
