( dpa ) - Bangladesh's Army Chief General Moeen U Ahmed returned Sunday from a week-long visit to India which he termed fruitful, officials said.

Moeen had talks with Indian central and provincial ministers during the high-profile visit which also took him to witness major defence installations.

Moeen, accompanied by his wife and two senior army officers, had met with government leaders in New Delhi and the eastern city of Kolkata to open a new era of bilateral cooperation, officials said.

Diplomatic sources said Moeen called on the Indian leaders to assist Bangladesh in reaching its economic and social targets.

The two neighbours also agreed to step up vigil on cross-border crime along the 4,000-kilometre porous boundary they share.
