Nine small children die in road accident in Mexico

(dpa) - Nine children aged between three and seven were killed in Mexico when the van their teacher was driving plunged into a roadside irrigation canal as they returned from a school outing, local media reports said Tuesday.

The accident happened at around 1 pm (1900 GMT) Monday near the town of Salamanca, in the central state of Guanajuato.

The 19-year-old woman teacher, survived unhurt and was arrested. She said she lost control of the vehicle because one of the children moved the steering wheel.

The children had visited a rural community near the town of Cardenas, where they lived.
