( dpa )- Serie A strugglers are set on signing Argentinian coach Hector Cuper after the firing of Domenico Di Carlo, Adn-Kronos reported Tuesday.

Cuper, 52, is expected in Parma to seal an agreement he discussed over the phone with team officials.

"If all goes well, tomorrow (Wednesday) Hector Cuper will be the new coach," club president Tommaso Ghirardi said.

Cuper has already worked in Italy on the bench of Serie A leaders Inter Milan from the summer of 2001 to October 2003. He was fired in December from Spanish side Betis Sevilla.

A crucial tie at Livorno is Cuper's first hurdle as the northern- Italy club try to avoid relegation they narrowly escaped last season.

Parma lost 2-1 at home against Sampdoria on the weekend, remaining rooted on 25 points next to third-from-last Empoli.

Livorno have 26 points when they host Parma next weekend, when Empoli visit mid-table Atalanta with 11 games remaining.

Reggina, on 22 points, and bottom side Cagliari, on 18, are worst off in the struggle to steer clear of the last three relegation berths.
