( AP ) - A pileup involving as many as 75 vehicles on snowy Interstate 70 shut down Colorado's main east-west route Monday, killing at least one person and injuring several others, officials said.

A semitrailer truck jackknifed and caused the original crash, said State Trooper Gilbert Sullivan, who confirmed the fatality and said others were injured in the crash near Vail Pass.

"We have up to 60 to 75 cars involved," Sullivan said.

At least 16 people with broken bones, bruises, and scrapes were taken to Vail Valley Medical Center, said hospital spokesman Don Bishop. All were in fair condition except one, who was to undergo surgery.

Six people were taken to a hospital in Breckenridge, where two were in critical condition.

People stranded but not injured in the wrecks were bused to nearby towns and interviewed, Sullivan said.
