(dpa) - The Netherlands' biggest dairy producer Friesland Foods has placed advertisements in Malaysian newspapers calling on consumers not to boycott Dutch products.

A company spokesman confirmed on Wednesday that adverts were an attempt to counter a call by a large Malaysian supermarket for consumers to take the action in protest against a controversial film released by a Dutch politician and critic of Islam.

The 16-minute film by Geert Wilders, titled Fitna and warning of the "Islamization of the Netherlands," sparked an outcry among Muslims in various parts of the world following its release on the internet.
