( dpa ) - Tottenham Hotspur announced Thursday that defender Ledley King will miss the rest of the season as he looks to protect a knee injury.

The England international has suffered no new injury, but with Spurs already qualified for Europe having won the Carling Cup, and safe from relegation, it has been decided that he would benefit from the break.

"My knee is actually feeling good at the moment and there is no inflammation, but we have to look at the bigger picture and accept that this is an ideal point in time to recover further, get best advice and make sure that I come back fitter," said King.

"They are six games I could well have taken part in, but we all believe this is worth doing for the longer term benefit," he said.
